With Increased Gambling The Trust On Referees Is Going Low: UConn Vs Iowa Is A Proof

Well, without controversy, it wouldn’t be the women’s NCAA Tournament. Friday night’s national semifinal between Iowa and UConn saw little talk about Caitlin Clark or Sunday’s title game against South Carolina, who remained unbeaten.

With Increased Gambling The Trust On Referees Is Going Low: UConn Vs Iowa Is A Proof

On a foul call, that is. And it had nothing to do with the whistle’s absence this time.

With fewer than four seconds left, Aaliyah Edwards attempted to put a screen on Gabbie Marshall when she was penalized for an offensive foul.

Furthermore, when you consider that sports betting and gambling will be so widely available, so informal, and so simple, not to mention that multi-million dollar sponsors like FanDuel and DraftKings will be well-represented (and compensated) in all of the major sports leagues, you can understand why fans are not only furious, but almost laughing at the mockery that sports officiating has become.

Nika Muhl of UConn made a crucial 3-pointer in the closing seconds of the game, and KK Arnold made a tremendous defensive stop and steal to set up the Huskies with an opportunity to take the lead.

The plan that UConn’s designers intended to deliver the ball to Paige Bueckers was thwarted when Edwards was flagged for an offensive foul.

In order to allow Bueckers to reach the top of the key and then turn back to the wing for the ball, Edwards quickly set up a screen on Iowa’s Gabbie Marshall.

Within SECONDS of last night’s game essentially being determined in part by one of the referees calling an illegal screen on UConn’s Aailyah Edwards with less than 10 seconds left in the fourth quarter and UConn down by one, fans couldn’t log on fast enough to social media and begin crushing the referee.

The officiating at this competition has previously been criticized.

In order to take off her nose ring, Hannah Hidalgo missed more than four minutes of Notre Dame’s Sweet 16 match. This came after authorities informed her, before to the game, that she could cover it rather than take it off. Hidalgo claimed to have worn the piercing over the whole season. She stated it interfered with her playing and dubbed it “BS”.

Additionally, one official in a second-round game in Raleigh, North Carolina, was changed at halftime when it was revealed that she had graduated from one of the participating colleges but had concealed it prior to tip-off.

LeBron James, a player for the Los Angeles Lakers, responded to the call via X, previously Twitter, expressing his disdain.

“NAAAAAHHHHHH!!! I ain’t rolling with that call.”

Angel Reese of LSU also blogged about her perplexity on the call:

“wait was that screen not set clean?”

Reporter John Fanta of college basketball was adamantly opposed to it.

“You can’t make that call there. You can’t make that call there. You can’t make that call there.”
